@ashleyelmquist tagged us for our favorite horror couple! Technically Gomez and Morticia are our #1, (hence our profile picture), but we felt they were too obvious. So, our #favoritehorrorcouple is Adam and Barbara Maitland! On today’s episode of #tedreviews we’ll be talking about The Boss Baby AKA the wtf did I just watch movie. The Boss Baby follows only child Tim as he learns that his new baby brother Boss Baby is a sentient corporate being sent on a mission to save the Boss Baby Market from losing its majority hold on love in the world. And I’m only scratching the surface. I really don’t know where to start with this movie. It’s not necessarily a bad film. The animation is surprisingly fun and creative and the voice work is fine, but at the same time, the more I think about this film, the more my brain gets wrapped in circles. So I get that the basic allegory is for sibling/familial acceptance and to avoid explaining where babies come from, but then why does the film have so many extra things? The basic narrative principle in fiction is that you establish some sort of parameter or set of rules for the world you’re creating and then have your characters interact inside that world. For example, in The Matrix, it’s established that our reality is really just a computer program that can be manipulated and that the real world is a post apocalyptic setting controlled by machines. Now you understand that Neo and the rest of them have a mission to save the world by using the Matrix, but then in Boss Baby’s logic, it would then do something like have a basketball tournament between the humans and dogs of the real world in between the main plot of saving the world. I guess what I’m getting at is that The Boss Baby repeatedly sets up things/rules only to ignore them or forget about them completely, leaving you confused in knowing what is “real” and what is just shown from the exaggerated POV of a child. But, like I said the movie does do some pretty creative things with the animation like changing the styles when going into the world of imagination. Overall, I guess it’s sort of unfair to overcriticize this movie because we’ve sort become accustomed to Pixar films which can be enjoyed on multiple levels while a standard children’s film like this will certainly entertain small children you’re babysitting or something, and definitely leave you with more questions than answers. 23/32 memos.
