Moses Fleetwood Walker was born in 1857 in a way station along the Underground Railroad in Mt. Pleasant, Ohio. He was the FIRST African-American man to ever play baseball in the Major Leagues. In a time where the civil war was not in the distant past, he broke the invisible barrier that had kept black men from playing “organized baseball” and joined the American Association when the Toledo Blue Stockings were admitted to the league. After facing a great deal of racism and hate, Walker left baseball for good in 1889. With his previously acquired degree, he pursued other options outside sports. He became an inventor, an author and entrepreneur. He lived a troubled life in his late years, struggling with alcoholism and becoming a vocal critic of integration. Though his achievements often go unrecognized, Moses Fleetwood Walker was a pioneer in a sport, as well as in a society, that had resisted efforts to fully integrate its ranks. ••• •••

Joanne Deborah Bryon, a woman who would become one of the most famous nationalists and activists in our community, was born in Queens, New York in 1947. She spent her early childhood alternately with her grandparents in Wilmington, North Carolina, and with her mother in New York. In college, she became a student activist and as a reflection of her new political consciousness and her commitment to her African heritage, she changed her name to Assata ("she who struggles") Shakur ("the thankful"). Assata moved Oakland, California, where she joined the Black Panther Party and upon her return to New York, she became a key member of their Harlem chapter. She soon became a prime target of the Federal Bureau of Investigation's (FBI) Counterintelligence Program. Due to this surveillance, Assata Shakur went into hiding and became a member of the Black Liberation Army, a nationwide network largely composed of former Black Panther Party members who had gone underground to escape criminal charges or police and FBI repression. One night Assata and her companions were stopped by State Troopers and Assata was detained, shot, and eventually convicted of the murder of one of the State Troopers. After two years in prison, she escaped and was given politcal asylum in Cuba. Assata Shakur continued to be a vocal activist in the 1980s and 1990s, speaking out on global justice issues and the prison industrial complex. During this time, she published her famous autobiography, telling the world her truth. •••
