'What an artist is trying to do for people is bring them closer to something, because of course art is about sharing: you wouldn't be an artist if you didn't want to share an experience, a thought.' - David Hockney David Hockney, Mr and Mrs Clark and Percy 1970–1, Tate collection

So here, in the way that some of the French artists react to their experience of London in this exhibition. I travel in order to research for my work. I went to Bavaria to draw from some of their famous castles. It helped me gather information for this drawing. Bringing new work back injects something fresh into studio and hopefully into future work.’ - Olivia Kemp ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Olivia Kemp, Untitled (work in progress), 2018 (ink on paper – 220 x 115 approx) ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Our Instagram feed is being taken over this week by artists sharing their work inspired by at Tate Britain. I love the way the direction of a line can create texture and shape and the challenge of needing to find a new mark to describe something, even a simple transition between brick and rock. For me, working in monochrome heightens the challenge.’ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Olivia Kemp, Only Then, We’ll Leave The Woods, 2017. I admire the way the paint handling is so balanced all over, drawing my attention to specific areas the artist has emphasised. It’s something I can see echoed in my own approach to the page. In this work I tried to balance the small areas of space with particular details I want the eye to land on.’ - Olivia Kemp ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Olivia Kemp, Only Then, We’ll Leave The Woods 2017. I found myself drawn into the foreground of one depicting a garden scene. I love the close observation of debris. The careful and controlled depiction of mess presents an almost ridiculous oxymoron, which I like the play with. This came to the fore in this work: Only Then, We’ll Leave The Woods. Sometimes my foregrounds almost look like someone has been in and hoovered up in between the objects.’ - Olivia Kemp ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Olivia Kemp, Only Then, We’ll Leave The Woods, 2017.
